These changes are geared to support greater transparency, access, and reuse of NSF-funded research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Major policy changes include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Public Access to Research Products<\/strong> \u2013 these changes align NSF\u2019s public access system with broader federal and scholarly communication expectations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No 12-month embargo on publications \u2013 deposits are required at the time of publication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Author Accepted Manuscripts (AAMs) and Version of Record (VORs) are accepted in NSF\u2019s Public Access Repository (PAR).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publications must be available with machine-readable XML metadata.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PAR Identifiers now function like persistent IDs (similar to DOIs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research.gov Project Reporting<\/strong> \u2013 this improves linkage between reported outcomes and public access repositories\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project reports will automatically populate PAR persistent identifiers and metadata for publications and other projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct dataset entry in project reports is prohibited \u2013 datasets should instead be archived with persistent IDs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data Management and Sharing Plan<\/strong> \u2013 these revisions reinforce timely data sharing in accordance with federal public access policies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DMSPs must eventually be created using the new Researh.gov data sharing tool (expected release is April 27, 2026).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All data supporting NSF-funded publications must be shared at time of publication, unless justified in the DMSP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about how this update may affect your NSF award(s) please contact the Office of Research Administration (ORA) by email at <a href=\"mailto:ora@maine.edu\"><strong>ora@maine.edu<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. National Science Foundation has posted a policy notice, NSF PAPPG 24-1 Supplement 2, that applies to all financial assistance awards issued on or after January 22, 2026.
